Problem Statements

We identified key problems that need to be addressed to deliver a solution aligned with the customer’s problem

01

Cross-Account Data Transfer

The application and DR environments were hosted in separate AWS accounts, requiring secure cross-account data transfer and automation without impacting operational stability.

02

Network Resolution Failures

Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs) in the SAP-DR environment failed to resolve correctly, causing communication issues and disrupting automated synchronization.

03

Automation Barriers

AWS Lambda couldn’t trigger Data Sync tasks due to restricted outbound connectivity from the VPC, disrupting automated data synchronization.

04

Secure Data Upload Requirements

Application owners needed to secure access to DR buckets without exposing credentials, requiring controlled and compliant access policies.

05

SAP Security Restrictions

Accurate synchronization between Amazon S3 and Elastic File System (EFS) requires precise file path configuration. Any incorrect mappings could result in incomplete or failed data transfers.

Our Methodology

We designed a secure and automated cloud framework to ensure continuous availability and seamless data synchronization across environments.

01 Discovery & Diagnosis

Highlighted connectivity and configuration challenges, emphasizing the need for a secure, compliant approach to sync data between Elastic File System(EFS) and S3.

02 Solutioning

Implemented a secure, automated data synchronization framework using native cloud services, integrating EFS, S3, Data Sync, and Lambda to ensure seamless connectivity, compliance, and reliability.

03 Execution & Delivery

  • Static  FQDN-to-IP mappings were configured in the servers to ensure accurate network resolution.
  • A NAT Gateway was set up to enable secure internet access for AWS Lambda and Data Sync services.
  • Application-specific S3 buckets were created for structured and secure data storage.
  • Elastic File System (EFS) served as a staging layer for data uploads, with automated Data Sync tasks managing seamless transfers between EFS and S3.
  • Reverse synchronization (S3 to EFS) was automated using S3 event notifications and AWS Lambda.
  • Each application owner received secure IAM access to manage their respective data folders.
  • For one of the core applications, a dedicated S3 bucket and EFS file system were configured to enable seamless two-way synchronization.
  • Data Sync tasks were established for both S3 to EFS and EFS to S3 transfers, with Lambda functions automating synchronization every 15 minutes.
  • Comprehensive pre-deployment validations ensured Lambda functionality, network configuration, access permissions, and EFS connectivity operated seamlessly.
